Gatlinburg Rotary dinner/auction May 7

Posted on May 4th, 2009 in Headlines by SCN

GATLINBURG - In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Gatlinburg Rotary Club will present an array of specially decorated wooden flower boxes available to the highest bidder at its annual Dinner and Auction, set for the evening of Thursday, May 7 at W.L. Mills Conference Center.

“We’ve had such success with our painted bears auctions the last two years that we decided to offer bidders a chance to acquire a unique item from another set of quality one-of-a-kind themed pieces at the auction, plus many other excellent items,” said Gerry Martin, club president.

“You will not want to miss this year’s event, and most importantly, all proceeds fund our community projects.”

Local artists as well as groups such as the Boys & Girls Club of the Smokies and the Gatlinburg-Pittman Interact Club are decorating the unique flower boxes to fit the themed of the 75th birthday celebration of the Smokies.

The Gatlinburg group was the first Rotary Club chartered in Sevier County in 1948. Citing the growing tourism trade in Gatlinburg and the need for visiting Rotarians to be able to attend make-up meetings during vacation periods, the Knoxville club’s extension committee helped Gatlinburg receive its charter in August of 1948, and by November the fifteen charter members were meeting in Gatlinburg.

The roots of the Gatlinburg club’s American Flag Project date to 1967, when one hundred flags, poles and plugs were purchased to allow the Stars & Stripes to be proudly displayed throughout the City for major American holidays. Over 100 flags are displayed throughout the City, with many of the 50 Gatlinburg Rotary members participating in the program.

This year’s dinner and auction evening will include great food, refreshments, entertainment and an awesome auction (live and silent).

Tickets have been distributed to Rotary Club members to sell to the many supporters and participants for this event, which takes place from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The donation of $75 per ticket will help fund the dozens of community projects that the Gatlinburg Rotary Club supports.

A limited number of tickets are also available from Paula King at the Gatlinburg branch of Citizens National Bank. To donate auction items or receive further information, contact Brad Spradlen at 850-8067 or Randy Roberson at Tennessee State Bank in Gatlinburg.
